In a ranking of large cities, those with 50,000 residents or more, Leander has come out on top. Recently, the U.S. Census Bureau released its survey data showing population growth across the country. Leander sat prominently on the charts as the fastest-growing large city in the United States.
The census shows that between July 1, 2018, and July 1, 2019, the City of Leander grew by twelve percent, bringing its resident count to 62,208. That rate is 24 times the nation’s overall growth rate of .5 percent and overshadows places such as Apex, NC, Chico, CA, Doral, FL, Georgetown, TX, and New Braunfels, TX by two percent and more. Just ten years ago, Leander was a sleepy town of only 27,288 people. What has drawn such an influx of new residents?
As the City of Austin attracts new homeowners daily with its eclectic community of musicians, artists, and tech enthusiasts, its prosperous economy inevitably impacts its neighboring communities. The shared success allows for more development in small towns, creating increased resources and a more attractive place to land. Not everyone wants the high traffic, fast-paced life of a city, so the lure of a quieter community within commuting distance of Austin creates a unique opportunity for places such as Leander. With a lower cost of living, excellent schools, and easy access to resources, it is no wonder Leander is the fastest growing city in America.
