One of Leander’s most well-loved recreational destinations is getting a significant upgrade — and it’s great news for local families, athletes, and the broader community.
Southwest Williamson County Regional Park will soon undergo major improvements as four of its soccer fields are converted from natural grass to high-quality artificial turf. The project was approved by Williamson County commissioners earlier this year and will be completed through a sponsorship partnership with Lonestar Soccer Club.
This investment represents more than just upgraded playing surfaces — it reflects the county’s ongoing commitment to supporting recreation, youth sports, and long-term community amenities in one of the fastest-growing areas of Central Texas.
What’s Included in the Turf Upgrade Project
The approved project will convert four existing soccer fields from natural grass to artificial turf. These upgrades are designed to improve durability, reduce weather-related closures, and allow the fields to be used more consistently throughout the year.
Currently, natural grass fields must be carefully managed to prevent damage caused by heavy use, drought conditions, or extended rainy periods. As a result, playing time is often limited to protect the turf. Artificial turf eliminates many of these challenges, allowing the fields to handle significantly more activity without compromising field quality or player safety.
In addition to the turf upgrades, the county plans to resurface the running track around Field No. 6 during the same construction period. While the track improvements are not part of the sponsorship agreement, they will further enhance the experience for walkers, runners, and athletes who regularly use the park.
Project Cost and Community Partnership
The total cost of the project is approximately $8.9 million. Lonestar Soccer Club will contribute $6.5 million, with Williamson County covering the remaining $2.4 million.
As part of the agreement, Lonestar Soccer Club will receive:
- Priority scheduling access to the upgraded fields
- Discounted field usage rates
- Naming rights for the four turf fields
- Responsibility for long-term turf maintenance and eventual replacement
This public-private partnership helps offset costs for the county while ensuring the fields remain well-maintained for years to come — a model that benefits both organized sports programs and the broader community.
Why Artificial Turf Makes Sense for Leander
Artificial turf brings several long-term benefits, especially in Central Texas:
- Increased field availability: Turf fields can be used more frequently without rest periods, expanding access for practices, games, and tournaments.
- Weather resilience: Turf holds up better during drought conditions and recovers quickly after rain.
- Reduced maintenance needs: Eliminating mowing, watering, and reseeding lowers long-term maintenance costs and conserves water.
- Consistent playing surface: Athletes benefit from a reliable, even surface throughout the year.
For a growing city like Leander — where youth sports and community events continue to expand — these upgrades help ensure infrastructure keeps pace with demand.
A Regional Park That Serves the Whole Community
Southwest Williamson County Regional Park is already a cornerstone of recreation in the area. In addition to soccer fields, the park features a variety of athletic facilities that serve residents of Leander and surrounding communities.
By upgrading key fields to artificial turf, the park becomes even better positioned to host larger events, regional tournaments, and expanded programming — all of which bring added energy and economic activity to the area.
What This Means for Living in Leander
Community investments like this are a big part of what makes Leander such a desirable place to live. Quality parks, well-maintained amenities, and thoughtful long-term planning all contribute to a higher quality of life for residents.
“Projects like this show how much our community values families, youth programs, and shared spaces,” said Rebekah Cummings of The Cummings Team®. “Parks aren’t just about recreation — they’re about connection, opportunity, and creating places where people truly feel at home.”
As Leander continues to grow, improvements like these help preserve the small-town feel residents love while supporting the needs of a thriving, active population.
