A Major Highway Transformation Is Underway Between Leander and Georgetown

If you’ve traveled between Leander and Georgetown recently, you already know the frustration that comes with congestion along RM 2243. What was once a quiet, rural two-lane roadway has struggled to keep pace with the explosive growth happening across western Williamson County.

Now, a long-anticipated solution is officially underway.

In January, Williamson County broke ground on a $132 million transportation project that will dramatically improve west-to-east mobility between Leander and Georgetown. This is more than a road expansion. It’s a complete reimagining of one of the region’s most important corridors.

What’s Being Built

The project will transform Hero Way and RM 2243 into a divided, controlled-access highway stretching from 183A Toll Road to Southwest Bypass. Once complete, the corridor will feature:

  • Two main travel lanes in each direction
  • Dual three-lane frontage roads for local access
  • A safer, straighter roadway alignment
  • Infrastructure designed to support long-term growth and increased traffic volumes

This modernization replaces the existing rural road, which has become increasingly congested and unsafe as traffic counts have more than doubled over the past two decades.

Why This Project Matters

Traffic relief is long overdue.
Anyone who regularly drives RM 2243 understands the bottlenecks. Residents have reported commute times of 30 minutes or more between Leander and Georgetown for what should be a relatively short trip. The new roadway is designed to significantly improve traffic flow and reliability.

Safety is a critical driver.
From 2016 to 2025, nearly 500 crashes occurred along this corridor. The realignment of RM 2243 with Hero Way is intended to eliminate dangerous curves and reduce the likelihood of serious accidents.

Economic growth is already following.
Improved access is one of the top factors businesses consider when choosing where to locate. Along this corridor, new development is already taking shape, including major retail, industrial, hospitality, and entertainment projects. On the Georgetown side, thousands of new homes have been built over the past decade, along with continued investment in regional destinations like Garey Park.

From our perspective, this project reinforces what we already know: infrastructure investment fuels opportunity, both for communities and for property owners.

Project Phasing and Timeline

Construction is being completed in multiple phases:

  • Phase 1A:
The first frontage road from 183A Toll in Leander to Garey Park in Georgetown, with one lane in each direction and a center turn lane. Completion is anticipated by early 2028.
  • Future Phases:
Additional frontage roads, followed by construction of the main highway lanes, will complete the full buildout. Design work for later phases is already underway.

Utility relocations begin this year, with the majority of road construction occurring next year. While some temporary traffic shifts are expected, officials have indicated that major lane closures are not anticipated.

What This Means for Homeowners, Buyers, and Investors

For homeowners, improved mobility typically supports long-term property values.
For buyers, better connectivity makes more neighborhoods attractive and accessible.
For investors and businesses, this corridor represents one of the most compelling growth stories in Central Texas.

As real estate professionals who specialize in the Leander and greater Central Texas area, we view this project as a foundational improvement, one that will shape how people live, work, and move through our region for decades to come.

A Word from Paul & Rebekah Cummings

“This highway overhaul is one of the most impactful infrastructure investments we’ve seen in Williamson County in years. It’s about more than easing congestion. It’s about safety, smart growth, and positioning Leander and Georgetown for a strong future. Projects like this are exactly why so many people are choosing to put down roots here.”
Paul & Rebekah Cummings

Construction will take time, and patience will be required. But the long-term payoff, which is a safer, faster, and more connected Central Texas, will be well worth it.
