Leander ISD’s Launch To Learning For The 2020-21 School Year

The Leander Independent School District (LISD) Board of Trustees recently approved a waiver to petition the Texas Education Agency (TEA) for a phased-in approach to in-person learning.

The measure approved four more weeks of virtual learning. It advanced a modified Leander ISD proposal to phase in on-campus learning for a percentage of students who wish to return to schools under guidelines from local health departments, beginning September 8, 2020. Under the TEA’s parameters, Texas ISDs may start the 2020-21 school year virtually for four weeks, with another four weeks with board approval.

Leander ISD’s modified plan includes three phases for students who seek to return to in-person learning:

Phase 1

Phase One begins for those with the highest needs, including special education students, pre-K, Kindergarten, First, Sixth, and Ninth grades, students without internet access, and children of faculty and staff members.

Phase 2

Phase Two includes all students in Phase One and adds Second, Seventh, and Twelfth grades and students receiving direct dyslexia services.

Phase 3

Phase Three includes all students in Phases One and Two, along with Third, Eighth, and Eleventh grades.

All other students who select in-person instruction will return to campuses on October 5, 2020. For those who choose Virtual Empowered Learning, virtual learning will continue.

Leander ISD has committed to working within the TEA guidelines to gauge community spread of the virus to open and stay open, reduce in-person numbers to minimize the spread of COVID-19, refine safety protocols, align with public health recommendations, and honor family choice.

Once in-person learning resumes, Leander ISD is committed to providing safety measures, including specific cleaning procedures, contact tracing, facility enhancements, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
