The much anticipated Lakewood Park in Leander, Texas, is open to the public! The grand opening took place on September 5, 2020, and featured tours, caricature art, princesses, bee demonstrations, sidewalk chalk artists, and balloon twisters.
Located just east of 183A Toll and south of Crystal Falls Parkway at 2040 Artesian Spring Crossing in Leander, the $8.75 million project began when the city obtained the land in 2015. The multi-year project was funded through 2018 general obligation bonds, 2016 parkland dedicated funds, and a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant.
Lakewood Park is maintained by the city of Leander’s Parks and Recreation Department, and it encompasses 125 acres. It includes incredible amenities like a giant recreation lawn (perfect for lawn sports and flying kites), picnic areas, an off-leash dog park, a fishing pier, a boardwalk, miles of walking trails, covered lakeside pavilions with built-in barbecue pits, picnic spaces, basketball courts, sand volleyball, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and more. Additional amenities are slated for the project, including a possible stage, signage, fencing, and seeding of the great lawn area.
Certain activities require time slot reservations to allow for safe social distancing practices. If you plan to visit with your favorite furry friend on a hot summer day, be aware that the artificial wood on the pier gets very hot.
