After almost a year of online learning for many Leander ISD students, the district is considering learning virtually as a permanent option for high school students.
The Leander Independent School District is calling the program the LISD Virtual Learning Academy. This program would create a four-year virtual school that would begin in the 2021-22 school year. It would have 300 ninth and tenth-grade students to start with for a trial. If successful, the program will expand each year, and the first graduating class will be in 2023-24. Once approved, it would turn into a lottery system for students in April of this year.
Currently, they offer an existing virtual program called New Hope High School. The new plan would expand on the current ones to include temporary virtual learning. Based on the Texas Education Agency requirement, students would transfer from their assigned high school to the online academy.
The program will have 12 full-time teachers and no additional staff. These 12 teachers will design the curriculum.
The district’s next action is to send a student interest survey and organize a parent information night. The next board meeting is on February 14th, and they could vote on the program then.
