Leander Approves $6.9Million For Second Phase Of San Gabriel Parkway Road Extension

Progress is underway on the San Gabriel Parkway extension as Leander City Council approved a contract for the second phase of construction. This project aims to extend the roadway from CR 270 to Ronald Reagan Boulevard, enhancing local connectivity and improving traffic flow in the area.

Project Details

During its Jan. 16 meeting, the council awarded a $6,912,964 contract to Patin Construction to build Phase 2 of the San Gabriel Parkway extension. This phase will connect the portion of the road constructed during Phase 1 to Ronald Reagan Boulevard, according to city documents.

Phase 1, which includes the central segment of the new roadway, was completed by 2020. Phase 2 will extend the road eastward, completing the planned four-lane roadway to Ronald Reagan Boulevard. The project is expected to be completed within 600 days of the start of construction, according to city records.

Background and Purpose

The project experienced a temporary pause in February 2023 when city officials redirected funds to support the construction of a water storage tank and prioritize water infrastructure improvements. Now, with funding secured, the city is moving forward with Phase 2 to enhance mobility in the region.

A key goal of the extension is to provide the Palmera Ridge and Palmera Bluff neighborhoods with direct access to Ronald Reagan Boulevard. The improved roadway will help alleviate traffic congestion and redirect construction-related traffic that has impacted these communities.

What’s Next?

Leander officials anticipate soliciting bids for Phase 3 of the project by late 2025. This final phase will extend the roadway westward from CR 270 to connect with Phase 1, completing the entire San Gabriel Parkway extension.

With the completion of all three phases, the city expects to enhance connectivity across Leander while reducing congestion on existing roadways.
